Watercolor on Pen and Ink TechniqueStudents chose either Viking or Native American symbols to draw using pen and ink techniques, like hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling and applied these techniques to their drawings, then used watercolors to paint over them.
Birchbark WatercolorsStudents learned about a method called, "tape resist." They used masking tape to create a negative space in their painting, thus creating the "birch trees" to shade in after their painting was dry. They also learned about foreground, middle ground, and background.
Modigliani-inspired Self PortraitsThese self portraits were inspired by the works of Amedeo Modigliani, an Italian expressionist painter who became known for his paintings and sculptures in a modern style characterized by mask-like faces and elongated forms.
